Reflections on an Incredible Holiday August 27, 2005

Our return flight was busier than the inward one but was comfortable nonetheless. Tik and I had the most perfect few weeks together, spending nearly all our time together without any problems whatsoever. I’ve never experienced such seamless compatibility before and we complement each other perfectly.

A full day in London August 25, 2005

We escaped the alcohol-induced wrath of Barry and Dan’s hangovers to spend our last full day in London.

Our journey from Milton Keynes was in the 1st class compartments of the new Virgin Trains so we enjoyed feeling like we were important for about an hour.

I’d been really looking forward to having a very select high-school reunion in Milton Keynes. Tik and I travelled from London by train where we met up with; Barry Price, Dan Morrison and Mike Ranson.

Went to see the Theatre production of Les Miserables in London. Loved it and we had incredible central E row tickets. I’ve seen the musical three times now and Tik and I have been watching the DVD for weeks in preparation for the show.

This time we had an truely outstanding version of Bring Him Home, actually more powerful than Colm Wilkinsons rendition and I enjoyed Marius’s interpretation of Empty Chairs at Empty Tables – singing in anger rather than regret.

All of the unsophisticated friends who weren’t interested in seeing it with us missed out on a real treat. We went with Grandma, Michelle and Peter.

I was naturally very excited to get back home to see Bonnie & Tilly again. Last time I was home I remember taking Bonnie to the vet as she was barely able to walk without limping.

I left England 2 years ago with the painful memory of her arthritic pain and of her whimpering as she couldn’t jump onto the bed.

Lisa’s 24th Birthday August 6, 2005

Unfortunately for Lisa, her insignificant little birthday was eclipsed by the grandeur of the family wedding although she was certainly compensated for it by the opportunity to use the “wow, all these celebrations, just for MY birthday” gag for weeks without it once becoming annoying.

Perfect hotel breakfast, perfect weather, an incredible castle wedding and with two wonderfully loving people getting married I’m amazed that Conde Naste didn’t fly in to photograph it.

Meeting the Family in Wales August 5, 2005

Friday morning I awoke to find two stubbornly stupid devil-horns popping out of my head. I’d lazily decided that I didn’t need a haircut during my last week in Bangkok but today realized that I was going to look pretty silly without one. My traditional 3 pound Bangkok haircut cost me 10 pounds here but made me look at least 11 pounds more handsome so it was worth the investment.

The Holiday Begins in London August 4, 2005

Michelle and Peter met us at Heathrow and drove us back to grandmas. Michelle and Peter are the most warm and genuine family who could have met us and Tik was made to feel welcome immediately. Grandma had, only a few hours earlier, returned from her own holiday so that night we ordered a typically English dinner of Indian takeaway.

Thursday was a day of relaxing and getting over our jetlag. Predictably we rose early – about 6:30 and took a walk to the shops to buy a newspaper. Having an Englsih newspaper greeting me for breakfast has been something I’ve always taken for granted. Grandma cancelled her newpaper delivery years ago in a dispute with her newsagent and I was also surprised to learn that my parents also cancelled their daily delivery too, citing lack of time to actually benefit from it. Are less people getting newspapers delivered these days?

Well Done Singapore Airlines August 3, 2005

Full marks go to Singapore Airlines for perhaps the most comfortable flight of my life. Tik and I arrived with time to spare at Bangkok airport, me having stayed up all night and Tik having had a few hours sleep before leaving.

On Our Way August 2, 2005

Well our bags aren’t yet packed and I’ve just woken up but we can afford today to relax.

We’ve spent most of our free time hunting, shopping and wrappping Thai trinkets all week and I’ve replied to all but one of my emails (sorry Elodie, I’ll get to you this week).

We’ve got the impossible challenge of fitting everything I want to take to England into my tiny case but we are nearly there.

See you at the other side of the world.
