A weekend in Petchaboon January 15, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Thailand , add a commentTo celebreate Tik’s birthday I flew to Khon Kaen again and Tik drove her family and I to Petchaboon. Petchaboon is described as the Thai version of Switzerland, (although without the things that make Switzerland a popular destination such as the snow and the tax breaks). This holiday was an ideal opportunity to get to practice my Thai with Tik’s mum and two sisters. Her father stayed home to apparently ‘guard the house’ – he isn’t one to venture far which was a shame but it’s never big problem for me to be taking a break with three females.
Personal Investment Pool January 14, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Business , 3commentsI am seriously interested in creating a private investment pool for myself, my family and friends. The next few weeks I’ll be banging on my calculator and discussing logistics and legalities with those in the know. My provisional timeframe for conception will be 4 more weeks but I’m looking to offer to a select few, interest rates of about 10% per month, a high level of investment transparency, 25-50% cash reserves and a personal guarantee of principle.
I have a few meetings scheduled and some significant due diligence to be making but I will keep some of you informed about progress when I make any.
Still a few teething problems with my Thai January 13, 2006

ME – Hello
SALES GIRL – Hello
ME – Do you have any beautiful sausages?
SALES GIRL – (blank look) What???, Why?
ME – I want to buy a present for my girlfriend. It’s her birthday this weekend.
SALES GIRL – (blank look, panic, confusion)
NOW I know the difference between a sausage (cyclor) and a necklace (soyclor). I won’t be making that mistake again.
Class 101 Classification of Gemstones January 8, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Education, Thailand , 2commentsWednesday was my first day as a trainee Gemologist. I got up early full of enthusiam at the prospects of actually doing something constructive oncemore and perhaps naturally a little apprehensive as to who I’d be meeting and how tough the course would be.
Moving into 2006 January 2, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Education, Thailand , add a commentLast year was, (as I am proud to reiterate) my best ever year. This year is going to be far better now that I’ve freed up nearly all of my time. New years are a natural benchmark for most people, but seeing as my move into central Bangkok is preceding my new study it’s a nice coincidence that my life restarts itself right now too.
Narnia – Worst Film of the Year January 2, 2006
Posted by Martin in : Thailand , 1 comment so farHow the hell did Narnia get so many great reviews on IMDB? This was the second movie I’ve ever walked out of and I was upset with myself for wasting 1/12 of my new year with it.

Posted by Martin in : Thailand , 1 comment so farHappy New Year. We spend New Years Eve with friends in a Mexican restaurant before returning to our 15th floor apartment to watch the torrent of fireworks together from the balcony.
I love being able to reflect on how life’s changed every year-end and 2005 has been the best year of my life, without doubt. I find it fascinating reading back on my original diaries to see what I’d wanted and expected to be doing, and in all honesty I never anticipated achieving so much here so quickly.
