Some New Life for This Blog December 31, 2008

Posted by Martin in : Miscellaneous , 1 comment so far

It’s been sad that we’ve done so much and I’ve been lazy to update this site through most of 2008. We’ve been so active that it’s just been too timely keeping everyone updated.

As of today we’re in for some big changes. I’ve renamed the site to reflect that Pavion.net is now a blog for both Tik and I.

We’ll update the header and some of the pages shortly.

We’ll both be jointly responsible for updating the site from now on so expect a bit more action.

Robert Makes Us Guacamole December 29, 2008

Tik samples Robert's Guacamole

Our current CouchSurfer treated us to dinner, preparing Creole Guacamole and a Pasta dish with tomato and beef.

Robert stayed 3 nights with us and two of those nights we had a really relaxing time watching movies at home.

Even though Robert is only 21 he was experienced beyond his years and we really enjoyed hearing about his life as a pending snowboarding professional, the event-plannig business he created himself, his experience in his band, his experience working as a chef, his climbing experiences and all the travel he’s done.

Robert’s now escaped our clutches and is spending his next month in Nepal.

Cinderella Musical December 21, 2008

Tik and I bought tickets to see Cinderella at Muangthai Ratchadalai Theatre at the Esplanade Shopping Mall.

We chose to buy tickets because our favorite musical singer Lea Salonga carried the lead part. Lea was the original Miss Saigon in London, has played Eponine in Les Miserables, sang the music for Lion king and has the kind of voice that made us pay 2,000 baht per ticket to see her. I had actually said years ago that if Miss Saigon (The musical) ever returned to Asia, I’d fly out to see it, so seeing this, as a compromise, saved me quite a bit of money.

Sadly, the show was pretty naff. Despite the high price and the fact that they banned children under five from attending, this didn’t have much to offer adults. It was pretty much a pantomime and the jokes were lame, the musical score mundane and monotonous.

Our lovely Lea didn’t really manage to save it. That said, we still enjoyed the opportunity to try something different. We did enjoy a few of Lea’s solo numbers and it got us into the Christmas spirit a little bit.

On leaving, we were also informed that the musical of ‘Chicago’ is also coming to Bangkok next February. We rushed to get the best possible tickets we could for the Valentines day Matinee performance. We’re both really looking forward to this, having seen the movie at least four times.

Bangkok’s Best Sunday Brunch December 21, 2008

After weeks of effort getting a reservation, Tik finally got us a table for the Centara Grand brunch buffet.

This is, without doubt one of the top brunch packages available in Thailand. As a Central Gold Card holder Tik was able to get a 50% discount for the both of us so we only paid about 700 baht each.

The buffet is spread between two separate restaurants that you can walk between. At one end is ‘The World’ – with international food and, a good walk along is ‘Ginger’ which specializes more in Asian foods.

There’s a juice bar in the middle of the two restaurants where the staff will prepare any type of juice or shake you care for.

We were overwhelmed by options. Tik filled her plate with fois gras from Ginger, whereas I certainly got my money’s worth from the cheeseboard alone. There were soup stations, a carvery, desserts, a chocolate fondue, salads, sushi, a noodle station, and, looking back I don’t think there was anything they didn’t have available.

We woke up late that Sunday, arrived for the buffet about 1pm, spent a good couple of hours stuffing our face, returned home and then fell blissfully asleep for the rest of the day. A perfect way to enjoy a Sunday.

Hailey teaches us how to make gim-bahp (Korean Sushi)

Hailey, our CouchSurfing friend from Korea stayed two nights with us and taught us how to make the Korean version of Sushi. She is now in Hanoi teaching children English for a month. One thing We’ll always remember about Hailey is that she brought with her a big pack of balloons to twist into cool shapes for the kids. Whilst here, she made an umbrella and flower for us. A few weeks ago I treated myself to a book called The Four Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss.

The book is a reference book explaining the value in outsourcing, automating and eliminating business systems to give the owner free time and flexibility.

I bought the book knowing that it would be motivate me and it’s really changed my attitude to how I run my current websites. The stream of CouchSurfers arriving at our place every few days, full of anecdotes about their travels really whet our appetite for taking 12 month to explore the world.

A Weekend in Hua Hin December 5, 2008

Tik booked us in to the Dvevan Dara resort in Hua Hin for the weekend. We’d booked it with no itinerary in mind but later discovered that a lot of our friends would be there that weekend for a music festival.

The resort itself was small and lacking in facilities. Tik had chosen a room with a private pool, although in all practical terms it was little more than a large (and chilly) bathtub.

Happy Moon December 3, 2008

moon

Although the phenomena was visible in many places I don’t think Americans or Europeans had the opportunity to see the smiling moon.

This photo (which wasn’t taken by me) shows Mars and Jupiter. It put a smile on the face of a lot of people and Tik excitedly texted everybody in her phonebook when she saw it.

It’s been a stressful week for many Thais who’ve lost control of the airports so this was a welcome sight for many.
