A Week in Taiwan – Day 1 November 21, 2005
Posted by Martin in : travel , trackbackAfter much hulabaloo about getting Tik a visa in time we flew Monday evening to Taipei to spend 6 days with my friend Sue. Our last message from Sue was “It’s bloody freezing here, and I’m acclimatized to it!” so I was a little apprehensive about how Tik might find our new adventure.
I met Sue many years ago at Go International, when we both worked as teachers. Sue has a daughter called Ella who is now about 11 years old. Sue was the reason I moved to Sammakorn. Shortly after visiting her just over 24 months ago I fell in love with the environment and moved in just a few weeks later.
Sue left Sammakorn about 18 months ago, having met and fallen in love with a Taiwanese artist called Wenjing. Swept off her feet, Sue and Ella left Thailand, took a few months holiday with Wenjing and his daughter Claire in New Zealand and set up a new life toghether in Taipei, periodically acquiring a farmhouse of animals in the process.
We were met at the airport and we arrived at Sue’s house shortly after midnight. We were keen not to disturb Claire and Ella who were fast asleep and needed to wake about 6am to prepare for school.
Sue deserves full credit for her ability to live the life she chooses. She began engineering her private farm in New Zealand where her and Wenjing bought six horses to be shipped to Taiwan. She then had to create a stable for them on her property and employ a full-time horse-shit-picker-upper for their maintenance.
Over the past 18 months she’s since collected about 7 dogs, 2 cats, chickens, roosters, turtles and a gorgeous piglet, uninspiring called ‘Miss Piggy’.
We had the pleasure of Miss Piggy’s hospitality for the duration of our stay seeing as our room also hosted her bed.
