Chiang Mai December 16, 2005
Posted by Martin in : Thailand , trackbackWe drove to Chiang Mai the next day, arriving tired in the afternoon. This time we stayed at The Karinthip Village Resort – a more modest, but practical resort in a central location. the first evening we headed out to the night market, although after shopping so much in the past few weeks we had little enthusiasm to buy anything new.
Despite being in Thailand second largest city, we really didn’t have much to do the following day. We were due to fly back to Bangkok that evening so decided on a wildlife day.
We got a few hours at Chiang Mai Zoo, seeing one of the two Thailand-famous pandas. After that we got to visit the not-yet-opened Night Safari which is previewing for free until the new years grand opening. This place was impressive however it was like a normal zoo with later opening hours. The night safari has caused humourous controversy in the past few months. My favourite incident regards how Thailand’s Prime Minister elicited a donation of 300 animals from Kenya, to announce only days later that as a marketing gimmick, visitors to the safari would be able to eat many of them in the restaurant. Kenya recently renaged on their agreement.
We flew back to Bangkok that night with our illicit cargo, which raised smiles at the airports security, but didn’t cause us any further problems.
