Peak Performance Buoyancy Dive & Navigation Dive April 18, 2006

The Peak Performance Dive was fun.  This is a mandatory requirement and just focuses the diver on how he controls his level of floatation in the water.

I consider myself quite strong in bouyancy control in most circumstances – quite noticably when I got myself into all manner of yogic positions yesterday to take my pictures.  My over-confidence left me reeling on embarassment when I was called to dive in between a hoop at the bottom of the sea.  Manoevering myself through tight spaces hasn’t ever been a problem yet today I majestically swooped through the hoops twice before nosediving smack into the ground!

I was a little complacent until that point but heeded the recommendation of the divemaster to use my hands more to keep steady.  After I did that I was back to my superman-eqsue horizontal self.

We also had a short game of underwater frisbee which was fun.  Everything happens in slow-motion and it takes no effort at all to return the disc, merely a tap of the fingertips.

Next came our navigation dive.  We were given compasses and had to perform a few exercises such as measuring our kick-rate and swimming in a square.  On completng that we were given 15 minutes to explore the area ourself with our dive buddy but away from the group.  That went well and we were lucky to see some beautiful stingrays in the water.

The dive site also hosts a very lonely little fish.  He has become a landmark for divers as he never ventures away from his home.  Divers have marked the area with a stone circle and it’s a certainty that when one visits he will be there.  Divers have afectionately named him ‘Nemo’.
